Roman Catholic Cardinal. In 1970 he acceded to the See as the third Archbishop and three years later became the second Cardinal to head the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. It is the second largest in the US. For 15 years the Irish born prelate (Cork Ireland) worked through enormous changes in the church. He resigned in 1985 due to ill health and lived at Holy Family parish in South Pasadena where he served as a parish priest. He was especially proud of the fact that during his tenure, he had celebrated Mass on every altar in the archdiocese. A heavy smoker, the cardinal died of lung cancer at the age of 79.
