Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served during the Civil War first as Major of the 9th Pennsylvania Reserves, then as Colonel and commander of the 6th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery/212th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. The unit was disbanded on June 17, 1865 and on September 28, 1865, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers "for meritorious conduct during the war".
