Reuben Elias Grubaugh was born in 1847 to Thomas Wilburt Grubaugh and Margaret Ann Cunningham. He married Lurinda Sorrels on 24 May 1870. They celebrated 58 years of marriage and had 10 children together, two of them dying at or near birth: Margaret Jane Grubaugh Ginter (1871-1957), Samuel Wilson Grubaugh (1872-1957), Francis Thomas Grubaugh (1873-<1880), Eliza Jane Grubaugh Bennett (1875-<1935), Elias Roy Grubaugh (1878-1919), Reuben Joshua Grubaugh (1879-1954), George L. Grubaugh (1882-1882), William Henry Grubaugh (1883-1968), Levi Joshua Grubaugh (1883-1909), and Wilbert Edward Grubaugh (1890-1890).
