The Spanish American War lasted fewer than four months (1898). Conditions of the subsequent peace treaty obliged Spain to relinquish sovereignty over Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippine Islands and Guam to the United States. On the American side the war was fought entirely by volunteers.

July 6th to 9th 1898: The 8th California Infanty Regiment, U.S. Volunteers, is organized by the Consolidation of the Second and Fifth Regiments, California National Guard, and is mustered into United States service for the term of tow Years at Fruitvale, California, with 35 officers and 1, 250 Enlisted Men, under the command of Colonel Park Henshaw.

February 6th, 1899: The 8th California Infantry Regiment, U.S. Volunteers, is mustered out of United Sates service at points in California and Washington, with 46 Officers and 1,211 Enlisted Men.
