She was born on April 27, 1927, in Pikeville, Kentucky, the daughter of Cleve and Elizabeth Thacker. In 1944, she was married to James Lee Gillespie. He died in 1952. She then married Johnny Adkins in 1954 and he died in 1973. Mrs. Adkins lived in Connersville for the past 16 years. She was a member of the Brookville United Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include six sons, Robert Gillespie of Connersville; Clyde Gillespie (sic) of Laurel, Charles E. Adkins and Richard Adkins, both of Connersville, and Johnny Ray Adkins and Jimmy Adkins, both of Grundy, Virginia; one daughter, Lois Lester of Grundy, Virginia; 22 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Tave Hayton and Betty Ratliff, both of Prestonburg, Kentucky, Barbara Thacker of Pikeville, Kentucky and Donna Mays of Ohio.
Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Janice Gay Coleman and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 1, by the Rev. Tom James at Brookville United Pentecostal Church, 12061 State Road 101, Brookville. She was interred in Union Cemetery at Lyonsville on Tuesday morning. Miller Funeral Home of Connersville assisted the family with arrangements.
