He was a son of John Henry Oden and Lorene Darby Oden.
He graduated from Carthage High School and attended Louisiana College. He was the owner of J.H. Oden Construction Co. from 1962 until his death. He served in the United States Army 508th Airborne Division during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by a son, John Hoyt Oden, Jr., who died on Jan. 17, 1978.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carolyn Edelman Oden, who he married 8-21-1951; a daughter, Sheri Oden Bickel; two sons, Ken Oden and Tom Oden; two sisters, Mrs. Geneva Oden Norman and Mrs. Gwen Oden Lewis; one daughter-in-law, Sandra Oden Rehnquist.
