Ole G. Jorde, the fourth child of Gulbrand and Kari Mikkleson Jorde came to America in 1861, coming to Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, then to the Dakota Territory, Lakeville township, Grand Forks County where he homesteaded. Ole and Olia lived in their covered wagon until the got a two-room sod house built. The first of their six children were born in this house. The house was a small structure made of sod and had two small rooms. In later years they built an addition which made of logs hauled up to the homestead by oxen from Turtle River. Much of the furnishings were homemade from these logs. The windows, plaster, nails and building material which they couldn't make they bought at Ojata. Some of the furnishings they bought with them when they came to the homestead. This home was small, neat and a comfortable place to live.
