Gulbrand Mikkelson Jorde was born on June 3, 1822, and was baptized June 30, 1822 in Flå, Buskerud, Norway. He is the son of Mikkel Nilson Jorde and Randi Olsdatter Gulsvik. He was one of seven children.

He married Kari Guttormsdatter Brotajore, who was born in 1829. Gulbrand and Kari were married by Pastor Legonger in Flaa Church, Nes, Prestegjeld, Norway in 1846. They had eight children, Randie, Mikkel, Guttorm, Ole, Bergit, Margit, Peder and Gulbrand. As the children grew up they began coming to America.

After Kari's death in 1874, Gulbrand remarried and had one son, Mikkel. After the death of his second wife, Gulbrand and his youngest son Mikkel were the last to come to America. They got here May 22, 1887.
