J. Eugene Wempen of 1030 Washington Ave., an employe of Alton post office for 39 years until his retirement in 1047, died at 5 a.m. today in Alton Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Tuesday morning.
Mr. Wempen, 78, had been in failing health for four years, and had been in and out of hospitals several times previous to entering Tuesday.
He was born in Alton, Nov. 9, 1885, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Wempen. Mr. Wempen attended the Alton Schools, Shurleff College, and Browns Business College.
His service at the post office had been mainly at the stamp window, but he also had been in charge of examinations for applicants to West Point.
Surviving are his widow, the former Dorothy Huff, whom he married May 15, 1923; a sister, Mrs. Adele Cruze, Washington, Mo., and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Miss Carolyn Wempen, a retired Alton High School teacher, died in 1960.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Morrow-Quinn Mortuary with the Rev. J. W. Jordan, pastor of First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Alton Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary after 4 p.m. Thursday.
