Long Illness of Mrs. J. W. Sloat Is Terminated
Member of Well Known Alton Family Died Today
Mrs. Emily Sloat, nee Wempen, wife of J. Wilbur Sloat, died just before noon today at St. Anthony's Infirmary where she had been in a dying condition for several days and members of her family who were here had been in attendance upon her.
Mrs. Sloat was born in Alton and had lived here all of her life. Her ill health began three years ago and she was obliged at that time to undergo a surgical operation. She never was completely well, and for the greater part of the time remained in a very bad state of health. Her condition became such a few months ago she was taken to St. Anthony's Infirmary for treatment and there she remained until the end.
Mrs. Sloat leaves beside her husband, two children, Helen and Rodger Sloat. She leaves also four sisters, Mrs. J. J. Roach and Mrs. Victor L. Duke of Redlands, Calif., Mrs. P. W. Cruze and Miss Caroline Wempen, both of Alton and two brothers, J. E. Wempen of Alton, and Harry Wempen of Chicago.
The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Bauer & Hoehn Funeral Home, Service will be conducted by Rev. John N. Morrison, pastor of the College Avenue Baptist church, in which Mrs. Sloat had long held membership. The funeral will be private. Burial will be in City cemetery.
