Livingston was a son of Mary W. (Martin) & David R. DeFreest. He was baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Wynantskill, NY on March 28, 1819.

Livingston had 5 siblings: Louisa, Van Alphen, Mary, Susan D. & Margaret F.

He married Elizabeth Moore on March 15, 1843 in New York, NY. They had 9 children: William, David, Ann Jane, Martin, Mary Louisa, John, Livingston, Susan and Van Alphin P..
He was an Artificer with the 15th Regiment New York Engineers Co. A during the Civil War. He was transferred to Major Walter Cassius Pontoon Detachment, Co. B.
He was a "laborer" after the service, according to the 1860 census.

Livingston died at Lincoln General Hospital in Washington, D.C. of Meismatic Disease.
