ESTHER ALLAWAY

Esther Elizabeth (Collins) Allaway, a long time resident of Trout Lake, died on Feb. 6, 2004, in White Salmon, at the age of 85.

She was born on Nov. 5, 1918 to Harriet Emma (Marshall) Collins and George Washington Collins on their family homestead on Underwood Mountain. She was the youngest of 10 children and attended school in White Salmon. Upon her graduation in 1937, she moved to Trout Lake and worked in the Forest Service office.

She married Carlton Allaway on August 14, 1940. The couple lived in the Trout Lake valley all of their married lives except for a short absence to Newberg and Hood River, Ore.

Their lives were dedicated to their Christian faith, their family of eight children, and operation of the family farm and dairy on Stoller Road. They were members of the Mt. Adams Baptist Church in Trout Lake where they were involved in the formulation of the church and construction of the existing building. They later attended the Grace Baptist Church in White Salmon.

Mrs. Allaway's life was characteristic of obedience to God, for whom she was always giving verbal praise for the events of life. Honesty, integrity, Bible study and sharing God's love with others were all a normal part of her life and a testament of her salvation through Christ.

In addition to helping with chores on their farm, she enjoyed gardening, baking, quilting, and oil painting. Her many fans included grandchildren who loved her homemade pies and buns.

She was a long time member of the Trout Lake Women's Club, and also a local quilting club. She suffered a major stroke in December 1988 which drastically changed her ability to partake in these activities she so greatly enjoyed.

Mrs. Allaway was preceded in death by her husband Carlton, two infant children Kenneth and Clayton, four brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by brother, Rev. William R. Collins, El Paso, Texas; four sons Carl Allaway, James Allaway and Daniel Allaway, all of Trout Lake, and David Allaway, Stevenson; daughters Donita Payne, Nampa, Idaho, and Brenda Bryan, White Salmon; 18 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Mt. Adams Baptist Church on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Trout Lake Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Trout Lake Fire Department "First Responders" or Hospice of the Gorge.
