Alice Marie Van Note, 80 of Marshalltown, passed away Monday November 23, 2009 at Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown.

Private interment will be at a later date at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa River Hospice or to the Van Note family.

Alice was born January 19, 1929, the daughter of Guy and Maude Lavina Barrett Mattingly in Grinnell, Iowa. She attended schools in Tama and later graduated from Colo High School in 1947. She had lived in the Marshalltown area since 1956. She was employed at Marshalltown instruments for over twenty years retiring in 1988. On June 15, 1966 she married George Van Note in Iowa City. The couple made their home and raised their family on a farm northwest of Marshalltown. She worked in flower bed maintenance for a few years at the Iowa Veterans Home after retirement. Alice enjoyed sewing, cooking for friends and family, canning vegetables and most of all nurturing her flower beds at her home.

Alice will be missed by her daughter Kay (Ken) Stewart of Clemons, Ia., four sons; Ronald Nelson of Marshalltown, Ray (Lyn) Nelson of LaSalle, Co., John (Marie) Nelson of Littleton, Co. and Victor Hubert of Marshalltown, step daughter, Roxanne Van Note of Glendora, Calif., eight grandchildren; Travis Stewart of Marshalltown, Jacob Nelson of West Layton, Utah, Sierra and Amanda Nelson of Littleton, Co., Steven, Scott, Marissa and Harley Nelson of Marshalltown and Alexis Hubert, two brothers; Sam (Sarah) Mattingly of Toledo and Larry (Betty) Mattingly of Marshalltown, two sisters Darlene (Gerald) Youngman of Ankeny and Betty Evans of Des Moines along with several nieces and nephews.

In eternal life Alice joins her husband George who died in March of 2008, her parents, her sister Lavina and brother Garland.

Alice was lovingly known as Grandma Honey and will also be missed by her many close friends.
