Atkinson Hill served under Captain William Harrod at the Falls of the Ohio (a rapids on the Ohio River near Louisville which is now by-passed by locks). He had a homestead on the Beech Fork River which exceeded 1,000 acres. In 1782, while at Rogers Station, he became involved in a religious dispute and built a cabin on the Rolling Fork River across from Goodin's fort. Atkinson married the daughter of Samuel Goodin, the Goodin's fort namesake family.

Later Atkinson Hill already had a law practice in Nelson County when young Mr. John Rowan arrived. Atkinson Hill liked this young lawyer and became his mentor. Rowan struggled financially during his early years as a lawyer. As the first judge of Nelson County, Judge Atkinson Hill took an interest in Rowan, furnishing him with money to expand his law library and taking him as a business partner.

In 1795, Rowan began construction of Federal Hill in Bardstown, his family estate, on land that his father-in-law gave him as a wedding present. Judge Hill built a house of stone based on the same floor plan as Federal Hill. Atkinson Hill's plantation home was destroyed by a fire in 1800's.

At his death, Judge Hill had personal property estimated at $10,000.
