His parents from Virginia moved to Kentucky and then to Texas. They arrived in Collin County in 1853 and settled southwest of McKinney.
Three years later, Daniel Stimson purchased property in Collin County, where he established his home and farmed the land.
Stimson was widowed twice before he married Mary Hewitt in 1875. They had two daughters, Nora and Fannie. Active in the Methodist Church, the Stimsons helped establish the Bear Creek Church near their homestead.
In 1888, the family moved to the nearby town of Nevada, where they helped organize the First Methodist Church. The Stimsons sent their daughters to private schools, but also played a part in the construction of the town's first public school building. When Daniel and Mary Stimson died, their homeplace was divided between the daughters.
The western half of the Daniel Stimson homesite has remained in the family and has been continually farmed by his descendants for more than a century.

OBIT: Daniel Marion Stimson was born April 25, 1827. In Pittsylvania County, Va., and died at his residence in Nevada, Collin County, Texas, June 30, 1898. His parents moved to Kentucky in 1835 and in 1850 he came to Texas. His occupation first was school teaching, and afterward farming. He was married three times: to Sarah F. Ashton, March 15, 1855; to S. J. Hunter, June, 1870, and to Mary A. Hewitt, December 7, 1875, who survives him. He reared a large family of children.
It is said that he was the oldest Texan as a Methodist in his section. He was also the first steward appointed for old Bear Creek Church, the oldest Methodist organization in the same section. Ever since he has held an official relation to the Church. He died a trustee of the Nevada Church where he has resided for the past nine years, He was true to his Church and all her interests. He stood by her with heart, mind and money. He read and loved the Texas Christian Advocate.
When about sixteen years of age a severe affliction of the body befell him from which he was never released till his death. At times his sufferings were intense and scarcely ever was he free from pain. Having an indomitable will and energy he continued to labor to the extent of his strength till his last days under the most distressing feeling and pain. He exhibited great patience in suffering and never murmured. The goodness of the Lord was the burden of his talks to his friends and the Church regarding his experience. He often said that his afflictions had been a blessing to him. He stated to the writer that while young he was deeply impressed that he was a sinner, and that he sought God earnestly and sincerely but obtained no hope till his nineteenth year, and then it was not satisfactory. He had peace, but desired to be filled with the love of God shed abroad in his heart. Such a blessing he did not receive till 1861 when he was abundantly and overwhelmingly blessed, and since then many times he had received the same fullness of joy and was constrained to praise the Lord aloud. He also stated that the ordeal of death was a source of horror till about ten years ago, when God delivered him from the fear of death.
He had a deep and abiding solicitude for the spiritual welfare of his children. He had severe trials and burdens but deliverance has come. His bereaved companion has journeyed with him in the hope of eternal life, through the valley of affliction. May she and all bereaved, some sweet day, meet their loved and own to suffer never more.
