Suggested edit: The son of Samuel & Elizabeth (Mishler) Buch, the family moved to Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, when he was young. In 1860, he was a clerk working in his father's liquor store in Reading. He is in the 1860 census as "Lemuel," and it appears his father is as well.
A Civil War veteran, he served four terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Reading August 5, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 14 as a private with Co. E, 128th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 19, 1863.
2. Enlisted and mustered into state service at Reading July 8, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis as regimental commissary sergeant of the 48th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 26, 1863.
3. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 16, 1864, as a sergeant with Co. B of the hundred-day organization of the 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to regimental quartermaster sergeant, and honorably discharged with his company November 4, 1864. He is in the company register as "Simon," and the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file lists him as "Simeon."
4. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia March 4, 1865, as 1st lieutenant of Co. D, 213th Pennsylvania Infantry, but resigned his commission effective May 26, 1865.
He married Caroline Snell but they apparently had no children. He died in Reading Hospital from "cerebral softening" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor.
