Bill Sands was born in Maynardville, Tennessee to Andrew Jackson and Rhoda Arzella Oxendine Sands and passed away in Cambridge City, Indiana. He married Nellie Coffman on 7/18/1914 in Union County, Maynardville, Tennessee. He and Nellie have five children.

Bill lost both of his legs, at about mid calf, in a sawmill accident at the age of about 20. This happened about 1917. It never stopped him from working or doing the things he liked to do. He planted a garden, was a carpenter, sharpened mower blades, and worked to help the war efforts during WW II since he was unable to serve in the military. Bill also worked at Conveto where he operated a drill press, Worls where he took care of the furnace, People's Bank, and did carpentry work for Omar Peelle at The National Road Traveler.

After Bill passed away, he had another grandchild. Another girl. So, Bill was a grandfather to a dozen grand daughters!! He always wanted a grandson
