Norwegian Leader. His name was his legacy for it has been used in the coining of a new world wide word and meaning, "Quisling" a synonym for "Traitor." Vidkun Quisling entered the Norwegian army serving as a military attache in Petrograd and Helsinki then involving himself in relief work in Russia for the old defunct League of Nations. Appointed minister of defense, he brutally suppressed a labor strike by hydroelectric workers then resigned to form the Fascist National Union Party which was never able to gain a single seat in Parilament. Disenchanted, he met with Hitler urging him to invade Norway. Adolph complied and the country was quickly conquered and Quisling proclaimed himself leader. His regime was short lived as Hitler appointed his own man to head the occupation government while Vidkun was given a secondary post. He however immersed himself in Nazi projects, attempting to organize a Hitler Youth program, the final solution for Jews and confiscating Royal properties for his own. With the German capitulation in 1945, he was offered escape by submarine to South America but refused, considering himself a patriot. Arrested by officials from the returning Norwegian Government, they convened a treason trial in Oslo resulting in convictions for sending Jews to their death, collaboration and stealing Royal properties followed by death from a firing squad.
