Thomas Fitzgerald was born on March 1, 1764 in Fauquier County, Virginia. His parents were William and Kitty Neville Fitzgerald. He had 8 siblings; Elijah, Nancy, Peter Jesse, Stacy, William, Lavina, Fanny, and Silas.

Thomas was a Private serving for Virginia in the Revolutionary War.

He and some of his sibings left Virginia and settled in Kentucky for a time around 1802. Thomas and his brother Peter Jesse Fitzgerald married the Eckley sisters. Thomas married Charity Eckley Fitzgerald on July 15, 1790 in Mason County, Kentucky. Peter Jesse Fitzgerald married Elizabeth Eckley around that same time. It appears that both couples' children were born in Mason County, Kentucky. Both couples moved to Missouri from Kentucky and many of their children went with them.

Thomas and Charity had 10 children: Susanna Fitzgerald Bray, Charlotte Fitzgerald Brammell, Squire Fitzgerald, Arminta Fitzgerald Cahill, Carvel Isaiah Fitzgerald, George Washington Fitzgerald, Sarah Fitzgerald Hibler, Ellen Fitzgerald Wiseman, Nancy Jane Fitzgerald Hibler, and Talitha Fitzgerald Phelps.

Thomas died November 15, 1847. He may have died in Jefferson County, Missouri, however, his gravesite has not been found. They lived in St Louis County at some point, but Jefferson County shares a border with St Louis County, so it is within close proximity. Around 1849, a severe cholera, epidemic struck the St. Louis area. Charity and at least 4 of their children and many of their grandchildren died during this time. Thomas' cause of death is unknown. He could have had cholera. They were burying so many people during this time that they may not have had time to place markers. It is thought that Charity and many of her children and grandchildren are buried in Hibler-Fitzgerald Cemetery, St. Louis County, Missouri. It is possible that Thomas is buried here.
