Joseph Allard was the son of Jacob Allard and Sarah ("Sally") Thurston. When he was a teenager the family moved to Warren County Illinois from New Hampshire. It was there that he met Fannie Wornom; they married 29 Aug 1861 in Warren County. They spent a few years in Iowa before returning to Warren County for the rest of their lives. Joseph was a farmer until they moved to Kirkwood, and then was a tavern keeper at a hotel in Kirkwood for a few years. He and Fannie had six children: Clayton, Blanche, Mertie, Chester, Mittie, and Pearl. The following excerpt notes another child, Cora, who had died by 1877.

The following, from The "Past & Present of Warren County, Ill, 1877" pg. 329 has this:
Allard, J.S. Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 10; post office Kirkwood; born in Carroll County, New Hampshire, April 13, 1838. Came to this county in the spring of 1856, and is one of the oldest settlers; wife was Miss Fannie Wornom, born in this Co. Feb 26, 1843; has family five children, living, Clayton A, Blanche, Mertie and Chester; and one dead, Cora; has 160 acres, value $10,000 rep.
