Ernest married Teresa Frederica Serfling in Pierce County, Washington, in approximately 1880; and, together they had five children. Teresa, originally from Minnesota, was from Thurston County and Steilacoom, Pierce County, and they lived in Orting, Pierce County, after their marriage. Teresa died in December of 1904, from "[p]robably neuralgia of heart" with "[s]arcoma of jaw" as a contributing factor.

Ernest remarried on May 2, 1906, in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington, to May E. Contine (nee Bradley), approximately 34 years old, born in Missouri.

By 1910, Ernest, 50, May, 38, Lettie B., 21, Willis, 19, Grace, 16, and Allen R., 11, are Ruby M. Contine, May's daughter, are living as a family in Washington. Sources: Wash. Reference No. prcmc-vol4-554; United States Census, 1910.
