KING, NC ~ Mrs. Mabel Viola Slate Lawson, 91, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Village Care of King after being in declining health for several weeks. She was born March 2, 1909, in Stokes County to Joseph L. and Edna Tuttle Slate. Preceding her in death were her husband, G. Fount Lawson, and a son, Melvin "Bud" Lawson. Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Marie (Lonnie) Pulliam of Eden and Guelda (Cleo) Hall, Lorene (Conrad) Clark and Kay (John) Brown, all of Winston-Salem; a daughter-in-law, Opal Lawson of King; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Mary S. Baker of Village Care. She was a member of Poplar Springs Church of Christ, where funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m., with Ralph Sproles, Don Wallace, ministers and the Rev. Don Harvey officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Gary and Rick Clark, Charles Hall, Jason Heath, Benny Lawson and Larry and Lonnie Pulliam Jr., grandsons, will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Slate Funeral Home in King. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the building fund of Poplar Springs Church of Christ, 7120 N.C. Highway 66 S., King, NC 27021, or Hospice of Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
