Lucy was the only daughter of Maj. James B. and Molly Roane Ruffin of King William County, Virginia. The exact year of her birth is in question, since the estimates vary according to which census is used. The 1860 census for Shelby County gives her age as 71. Lucy was married twice, first to Dr. John Hoskins of King and Queen County, Virginia. She had two children, Eliza who must have died as an infant, and John Hoskins. In the 1860 census, John was living with his mother, was 50 years of age, and the record indicates that he was mentally disabled. Lucy's first husband died in 1823. She later married Edward W. Kenney, a school teacher about twelve years younger than she, who had immigrated from Ireland to Virginia. They married about 1829 and in 1830 they moved to Hardeman County, Tennessee where two of Lucy's brothers and their families had moved. There the couple had their only child, Virginia Ruffin Kenney (1832-1916) when Lucy was more than 40 years of age. In 1837 Lucy and her family moved to Memphis where Edward continued to own a farm but also worked for a Commission Company. Their daughter, Virginia would later marry Julian Bedford. Following Edward Kenney's death in 1857, Lucy and her disabled son John Hoskins, moved in with her daughter's family. Lucy died in 1861 from consumption (tuberculosis).
