Born in Dublin, Ireland and educated for the ministry in Edinburgh, Scotland, Edward Kenney was not happy with his prospects and ended up joining the English Navy. He immigrated to the United States when he was in his early 20s, ending up in Virginia as a school teacher. There he met and married the young widow of Dr. John Hoskins whose maiden name was Lucy J. Ruffin. They married about 1829, and then moved to Hardeman County, Tennessee in 1830. Lucy had two brothers who moved to this part of Tennessee first and this couple must have decided to join them. In 1832 their only child was born, a daughter, Virginia Ruffin Kenney. From Hardeman County, the young family relocated to Memphis in 1837 where Edward went into the Commission business in the firm of Ander, Carr, and Company.
