Nels Peter Grass

Nels Peter Grass was born in Denmark on January 6th, 1878. He came to America with his parents and eleven brothers and sisters at the age of ten and settled at Owatonna, Minnesota.

On December 5, 1900, he was united in marriage to Zora Bornt. To this union three sons were born: George and Forrest of Owatonna and John of Le Roy. With whom he made his home since Mrs. Grass' death in 1947. He is also survived by four grandsons: James and Robert of Owatonna and John and Richard of Le Roy, also two great grandchildren, Cindy and Lynn. One sister, Mrs. Lena Schroeder of Minneapolis and a brother, Christian of Burkhart, Wisconsin. He spent his entire life farming and until the past summer was actively engaged in it. He was at the same time very interested in farm organizations such as: the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association of which he was a member. The Minnesota Horse Breeders Association of which he was President for many years. He was a director of the Blooming Prairie Branch of the Federal Land Bank for a number of years. In his late years he was very interested and active in organizing the Le Roy Rural Fire Association.

Mr. Grass was very interested in 4-H Club work since the very formative years of the organization and has received untold joy from the accomplishments of his three sons and grandsons in it.

Mr. Grass enjoyed good health until September 20th, when he suffered a severe heart attack and was confined to his bed for six weeks. His doctors had advised him that he had recovered sufficiently and that he could spend the winter in California as he had the past ten years. He had been there for one week and one day when he suffered another heart attack which was fatal.

Mr. Grass will be sadly missed by his family, relatives and friends for he was a man who lived to make friends.

His early married life was spent in very close contact with the church but later years he had little interest in it or spiritual things. The past weeks since his illness he had become very interested in the Bible and in spiritual preparation for death so that definite change was recognized in him by his family and close friends.

God moves in mysterious ways his wonders to perform.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, (today) at 1:00 P.M. from the Martz Funeral Home and at 3:30 from the Conley Funeral Home in Owatonna. Rev. George Bergland will officiate.

Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Owatonna.

Casket bearers will be Arthur Flikki, Silas Hatlestad, Mel Iverson, Carl Knudson, John Mossyge and Walter Schwark.
