Elizabeth Shaffer was the daughter of James & Margaret Brooks Shaffer. (per calculator at ancestry.com, that makes her my 3rd great grand aunt).

She was born & raised in Grove Township, Clinton (now Cameron) County, PA.

She first married (? Rev) Adam Haughenberry on or about April 28, 1853. Elizabeth & Adam had one son, James Lorraine Haughenberry; (2-25-1854 to 4-3-1908). On August 28, 1854, when James was only about 6 months old, his father died.

In 1860, Elizabeth and James are found living in Grove Township, with Elizabeth's parents James & Margaret Shaffer.

Before 1870 (some sources say 1869), Elizabeth married her second husband, Dr. Amos French of Coudersport. She was the second wife of Dr. French. He was about 20 years older than Elizabeth, but they did have one child together, a son, Francis A (Frank) French (2-15-1871 to 11-26-1937).

It appears that at some point after Amos died (on May 15, 1886) Elizabeth went (or was sent) to live in Warren PA. The 1900 & 1910 Census records both list Elizabeth French (with birth date of March 1828 reported in 1900) as an "inmate" at the "State Hospital for the Insane". Sadly, this is supported by her Obituary, which states that she died in Warren & was returned to Coudersport for burial.

She died August 15, 1912 & is buried in Eulalia Cemetery.

Elizabeth's grandfather, Benjamin Brooks, is a recognized & proven Patriot Ancestor for both Sons of, and Daughters of the American Revolution. (Benjamin's DAR Ancestor # is A014961).
