Per ancestry.com's relationship calculator, Henry Shaffer was my third great grand uncle.

Records indicate he was born January 2, 1812, the second of 15 children born to James & Margaret Brooks Shaffer, but sources conflict between Ohio & PA as Henry's birthplace. Family legend puts his parents in Ohio during war of 1812 (see the story of Margaret & the Indian on his mother's profile), so that is likely more reliable.

He married Jane Mason, and they had at least 8 children according to available records.

Per email received 3-20-2014 from Dee Zito (a Shaffer descendant and respected family researcher):

"Regarding the posting for Henry Shaffer in Jericho Cemetery, I wanted to fill you in on the children of Henry and Jane Mason Shaffer. They had 9 children:

-Christopher Columbus (aka Lum, Columbus C., and earlier Washington) b. 1843, d. 6 Feb 1891

The family of Henry & Jane were farmers.

Henry died October 17, 1864, and is buried in Jericho Cemetery next to wife Jane.

Henry's maternal grandfather, Benjamin Brooks, served in the Revolutionary War and is a certified DAR ancestor. His paternal grandfather, Henry Shaffer, immigrated to America just before the Revolution and is said to have served as well, but I have not found documentation to support this and he is not yet listed in the DAR Patriot lists.

Any additional information on this family would be appreciated.
