Marion is the oldest child of Harrison G Otis (HGO) Childs and his third wife Elizabeth O'Brien (b. abt 1838, Canada), and she is HGO's only daughter. She and her younger brother, Francis "Frank" H Childs, were born in West Union, Fayette, Iowa where their father was at that time pursuing a career as a wagon builder. Marion's older half-brothers, all of whom settled in Washington State, include: Edwin B, William O, Martin L, Wesley H and Charles O Childs. Marion's maternal grandparents are Owen and Mary O'Brien, and her paternal grandparents are William and Sally Childs.

Miss Marion L Childs became the bride of Mr. Charles R Swobe on October 10, 1890 in Baker County, Oregon. Sharing in this special day were Rev M.H. Kauffman and witnesses Lizzie Cochran and Mr and Mrs John Smith. Charles' family of origin was one of some influence, his father being Captain James A Swobe, his uncle being Captain Thomas Swobe, and his sister Harriett having been a pioneer in establishing Kindergarten classes.

Marion is known to have been a seamstress, a talent she pursued as a dressmaker here in Salt Lake City. Charles and Marion moved to Utah around 1896. Though she and her husband had been married ten years at the time of her early death, her family has found no record of Marion having had children.
