A professional soldier from Melbourne, Vic, Lt Col Patterson embarked from Melbourne on HMAT "Orvieto" (A3) on 22 October 1914. After taking part in the 25 April 1915 landing at Gallipoli, he suffered a nervous breakdown due to his large workload up to that point and returned to Australia on 6 October 1915. On 19 May 1916, he died at 5th Australian General Hospital, Melbourne.
