He set sail for North America from Glasgow in July of 1853/4 and arrived in Quebec, Canada. In 1857 he immigrated to the US. When he was 26 he married Ruth Ann OSTRANDER in St. Clair Co., Michigan on Jan 12, 1859.
The 1860, 1870 & 1880 Censuses show that James was a farmer, first in Almont, Michigan and then in Dayton, Michigan.
The 1900 & 1910 Census shows that the family moved to Harris Co., Texas, with James still listed as a Farmer.
In 1917 his wife Ruth Ann passed away and in the 1920 Census James is listed as a widower, living with living with his sons John & Edward & his niece/daughter-in-law Hazel Spence.(Edward & Hazel were first cousins). He passed away later that year.
