After many months of intense suffering, my playmate and schoolmate in bygone years passed into Eternity on May 15th, aged 75 years and 9 months. Deceased was born at the family home on Church street in this city and never changed his residence, choosing to remain with the friends of his youth and later days.
The greater part of his life was spent in mining. He was the oldest son of the late Thomas and Jane Swinbank and was married to Miss Mary Belonger in September, 1870. Of this union six children were born, two having died many years ago. He is survived by his wife, daughters Mrs. John Rodham of this city, Mrs. S. T. Hill of Warren and sons Thomas and Eugene of Warren. The family circle consisted of Thomas, deceased, Jennie Hicks of Los Angeles, Calif., John, deceased, Joseph and Victoria at home, Charles of New Diggings and George of Iowa. His is also survived by ten grandchildren.
In his boyhood days he attended the village school taught by the late Major William Warner (who in after ten years became the leader of the Grand Army of the Republic). His classmates were Edw. H. Ford of London, Eng., Lafayette Irving of St. Louis, Mo., Wm. J. Saunders of Clear Lake, Iowa, John B. Roy of Darlington, Wm. Osborne of Joplin, Mo., and Edwin Rule of this city. Deceased was a faithful attendant of the Primitive Methodist church and Sunday School.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, Rev. Griffiths officiating, assisted by the choir. Internment was made in Evergreen cemetery. (Contributed by E. Rule)
