Funeral services for the late Peter DeFoe of Minneapolis, whose death was mentioned in this paper last week, were held Saturday morning at 8:30 at the home in Minneapolis and at 9:00 o'clock at the Church of St. Albert the Great. Burial was made at St. Mary's cemetery, Minneapolis.
Peter DeFoe, a former resident of Atwater, passed away June 3, 1936, at his home, 3244 36th avenue south, Minneapolis, after a month's illness, at the age of 64 years, 5 months and 5 days.
Mr. DeFoe was born in Hastings, Minn. Dec. 28, 1871, the son of John DeFoe and Mary Franklin DeFoe. With his parents he moved to Atwater in the fall of 1872 and settled on a farm one and a half miles north of Atwater.
On January 26, 1898, he was united in marriage to Mary Evelyn Wheeler at Kandiyohi, St. Patrick's church. Three children were born to this union. Mary Catherine, who died in infancy, and Margaret and John.
From 1898 to 1908 they farmed the old home place just north of town. In 1908 they moved into Atwater and in 1920 moved to Minneapolis, where Mr. DeFoe was engaged in the meat business during his residence there.
Mr. DeFoe was a member of the Church of St. Albert the Great, and the Holy Name Society.
Surviving him are his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Edward W. Tait, of Minneapolis, one son, P. John, of Crookston, his mother, Mrs. Mary DeFoe, Minneapolis, who is 92 years of age, and a brother, Moses DeFoe of Atwater.
Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Moses DeFoe and daughter Hazel, Mike Wheeler and Mrs. James Tait of Atwater, Mr. and Mrs. John DeFoe of Kandiyohi, Mrs. John Scully and daughter Laura of Crookston, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Dufault and Mrs. Napoleon Dufault of Crookston, Joseph Dufault, Baptist Dufault and J. B. Dufault of Gentilly, Ed Dufault and Miss Delvina Dufault of Red Lake Falls.
Many old friends in Atwater and vicinity are saddened in the death of Mr. DeFoe, who was but a year old when brought to Atwater by his parents, thrifty pioneer residents of the community. The two sons, Moses and Peter, lived here on farms just north of the village and later in Atwater until Peter removed to Minneapolis.
Deceased being a resident here the greater part of his life, was well known. He was highly respected and had many friends who will miss him. Especially does his brother feel the loss. Atwater joins in extending sympathy to the bereaved family.
