FUNERAL SERVICE AND BURIAL OF MRS. MARY DEFOE
In our last issue we briefly mentioned the death of Mrs. Mary DeFoe, 93 years and 7 days of age, who passed away at the Soldiers' Home Tuesday evening, April 13, after having spent well these many years given her.
Mrs. Mary Franklin DeFoe had the distinction of being a relative of the famous Benjamin Franklin of early American history days, she being a great great niece. She was born at Delhi, New York April 5, 1844, and came to this state as a young girl. In 1866 she was married to John DeFoe at Hastings, Minn.
He was a Civil War veteran, surviving the fiercest of battles during the war.
In 1872 Mr. and Mrs. DeFoe moved to their now home one and a half miles north of Atwater where they built themselves comfortable surroundings and enjoyed the fruits of their labor.
Five children were born to them, two passing away in childhood and at present only one son, Moses DeFoe, survives. Peter DeFoe, another son, died last June, and a daughter, Mrs. Nina French, passed away several years ago.
In 1901 Mr. and Mrs. DeFoe built themselves another home in Atwater, the one now occupied by Moses DeFoe and daughter. Deceased remained in her Atwater home until 12 years ago when by choice she sought admittance to the Soldiers' Home where she remained until death. When well enough she came up every year for a visit with her family.
In 1916 Mr. and Mrs. DeFoe celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at which time relatives and old friends greeted them on the happy occasion.
Deceased was a brilliant woman of the finest qualities. She was entertaining, kind and charitable, and has many friends remaining in this vicnty who are saddened at her passing.
She leaves to mourn her death her only son, Moses, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Atwater at the DeFoe home at 9 o'clock at the Catholic church in Kandiyohi. Interment took place in the Catholic cemetery just north of the village.
