Rosa was the daughter of Stephen Rackley Deane and Elvira Pratt. Her early years were spent in Massachusetts where her father had employment. Rosa had a younger brother who died as baby, and a younger sister Abbie. Her mother died of tuberculosis in 1855 when Rosa was ten. Her father returned to Leeds to live permanently. Her father had four sons by his second wife.

Rosa married Rodelphus H. Gilmore of Leeds in 1866. Rodelphus was called "Dell." He was a graduate from Bowdoin College, and had a long and successful career as a lawyer and judge. The couple took up residence in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Their children were Eliza Otis Gilmore, Ralph Gilmore and Deane Gilmore.

Rosa contracted tuberculosis. In 1876 she and her family returned to Leeds for a visit. Rosa died here. She is buried in a small graveyard near her father's home.

In the years following her death, her sons Deane and Ralph died, and are buried with her at this cemetery.

Dell remarried and lost his second wife, possibly also from tuberculosis. He married a third time and had three additional children.
