Charles Edwin Hicks, 89, of Conway, Arkansas, died Friday, April 20, 2012, at Conway Regional Health System. He was born on Mill Street, Malvern, AR, on November 7, 1922, a son of the late Hosea "Jack" and Mamie (Paul) Hicks. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marian Pauline Roberts. His two brothers and sister survive him, Paul Hicks and wife Linda and Bill Hicks and wife Pat; and, Helen White.
The family moved to Walco (Malvern area) when he was age 2. They lived there until he was about 4 years old. There was another move, this one to Hutchinson, KS, where they lived until he was 6. The family then returned to farm in the Malvern area.
Formal education for Charlie began at Fairview School, just south of Malvern on Hwy 9. He attended Fairview through third grade. The family moved to Ridge Road in Malvern and Charlie attended Central School from 4th through 12th.grade.
After graduation, Charlie returned to Kansas and worked at an aircraft plant, welding landing gear trusses. From there he worked in Hanford, WA, for a while before moving on to Portland, OR, where he worked in the Kaiser Shipyards.
Charlie and Juanita June Haley were married in Portland on August 20, 1944. They moved from Portland to Pascagoula, MS, where he worked in the shipyards. Little Rock was home for Juanita so they moved there before Sandra Luana was born who preceded him in death. Charlie drove a delivery truck for National Biscuit Company several months before going to work at AFCO Steel where he worked until his retirement on January 1, 1988.
Three sons were stillborn to Charlie and Juanita: Charles, Jr.; David Lawrence; and Ronnie Eugene. While living in Little Rock, Charlie and Juanita lived on Fair Park Blvd., Welch Street, and Lamont Drive. Juanita died as a result of lung cancer on Feb. 4, 1983.
Two children were born to Sandra: Ronnie Wayne Jones, Jr. who married Kim Turley, and Melody Anne Dreher . These two grandchildren have two children each. Ronnie and wife, have daughters Tiffanie Alexis and Courtney Renee. Melody has a son, Drue Charles Fetters, and a daughter, Tierza Genne` Warren. Courtney Renee has a daughter, Keilee Faith Jones, his only great great-grandchild.
Charlie and Martha Helen Castleberry married on May 26, 1984, at No.2 Westwood Lane in Little Rock. They lived there until April, 1988, when they moved to Faulkner County, just off Hwy 89, east of Mayflower, AR. Martha has two sons, Paul Richard and Randy. Paul Richard and wife Ruth have two children; Rebekah Lynn, who married Adam Morrow and David Paul Zan who married Carissa Carter. Rebekah and Adam's children are Aidan and Aurora. Randy and wife, Iwana have sons; Ryan Randall who married Tracy Cochrum and Jesse Ray. Ryan and Tracy's son is Tyson Paul.
Charlie and Martha lived in their Faulkner County home for 19 years where he enjoyed spending time in his peach/apple orchard, before moving to Conway in 2007. They are members of the University Church of Christ in Conway where everyone knew Charlie as the peppermint man.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00pm, Saturday, at the funeral home. Funeral will be 2:00pm, Sunday, in the chapel of Griffin Leggett Conway. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Memorial Park, Alexander, under the direction of Griffin Leggett Conway, 1751 Dave Ward Drive, Conway, Arkansas 72034. 501-327-5000.
