OHIO BEGINNINGS
Obed A. [Aaron?] Borum, wife Alice Insley, and family are listed in Fairfield, Highland County Ohio in 1830 with sons in the correct age group for Aaron. Obed died in 1839, while Alice lived until 1877. They were both, along with some of their children, buried in a Quaker cemetery in Leesburg, Ohio.
1840 census, Alice is shown with 5 sons: 1 5-10, 1 10-15, 3 15-20. The search to ascertain Aaron's parents will continue.

There is a document showing Aaron spent perhaps a year in the Jeffersonville penitentiary in southern Indiana when he was 24 or 25.

STOPOVER IN INDIANA
He was released by March of 1850, and stayed in the home with a young couple, William and Louisa Ward, in that area. He worked as a farm laborer.

ILLINOIS
Aaron then made his way into Illinois and specifically Waynesville of DeWitt County before 1855. There he worked as a farm-hand and married Sarah Jane Winkle April 29 1856.

MILITARY SERVICE
The Civil War interrupted their life. Aaron was mustered in on Aug 1 1862 with Co. "D" of the 107th Illinois infantry. On his military documents he was noted as living in Clinton, IL DeWitt Co, 27 years old, farmer, married. He saw action in Kentucky, Tennessee, and several other southern states. He was mustered out in June of 1865, and was sick with dysentery for a long time at Louisville KY before returning home. Aaron's age was listed as 27 in 1862 [making a birth year of 1835] on his "Detail Report"; whereas his record at the Soldier and Sailors' home listed him as born in 1824.

Vital statistics: 6' 6" tall!, dark hair, blue eyes, light complexion, and having been born in Champaign County of Ohio (another source adds Hamilton Township). He was one who survived the war and was mustered out June 21, 1865. He was sick in Louisville, KY beginning June 28, 1864. His ailment appears to have been chronic diarrhea as a result of dysentery. He was honorably discharged and cited as giving "distinguished service" on his record.

AFTER THE WAR
Aaron labored as a farm hand and in building construction during his active years.

After the War these children were born to he and Sarah Jane, all in DeWitt County IL:

DIVORCE
Aaron and Sarah Jane divorced shortly after Lillie Mae's birth. Sarah Jane remarried in 1879.

LATTER YEARS
His health was failing by 1888. He was then working as a construction laborer in Louisiana MO. His employer wrote a letter commending Aaron to the care of the Soldier and Sailors Home in Quincy IL. He was admitted in December of 1888, and then passed on two months later.

FINAL REST
His wife Sarah Jane and son Joseph Edward are buried with daughter Martha Ellen Borum-O'Daniel and Lillie Mae Borum-Richards in the same cemetery in Shelbina MO [about 50 miles west of Aaron].
