Joseph Whicher worked as a sailor before working for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1874 he attempted to get work on the James-Samuel farm, to get information on on the location of the James boys. His body was later found at the Liberty, Independance, Lexington Crossroads. Deputy Sheriff John Thomason concluded from the testimony of Blue Mills Ferry operator John Brickley that he had been murdered by Jesse James, Arthur McCoy, and Jim Anderson (brother of "Bloody Bill".) Cole Younger was furious as the body was dumped in his county, he suspected that Jesse had done it to throw suspicion on him. Frank James was indicted with the murder but charges were later dropped. Whicher was 26 years old, and had married Mollie A. Hidlebrand less than 4 months prior to his death.
