Portrait Painter. Born of a Spanish father and a British mother, he became a student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1877. His first portrait of Saint Sebastian shown at the 1883 juried Salon des Champs-Elysees won him praise and attention. In less than ten years, he was in high demand. Among his clients were Paul Verlaine, Sarah Bernhardt, Virginia Amelie Aveano Gautreau and others of the Paris elite. His portrait of Bernhardt would win him a silver medal and he would be made both a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor and a member of the jury of the Champ de Mars. He also contributed to various publications such as "Les Danaides," and with several other prominent painters, illustrated "Les Chauves-Souris" by Robert de Montesquiou in 1893. His New York exhibition continued to bring him accolades and his work was regularly featured on the front pages of various periodicals. After his death, his fame faded somewhat. But there has some resurgence in his popularity in the 20th century. He was married twice and fathered three daughters.
