Funeral Services for William J. "Bill" Morris, 91, of Aledo, will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Speer Funeral Home, Aledo. Burial will be in Aledo Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Mercer County Senior Center or Community Projects of Aledo for the football field and track renovations.

Bill died on Saturday, April 21, 2012, at Trinity, Rock Island.

Bill was born on Sept. 9, 1920, in Mercer Township, son of John and Jessie (McCaw) Morris. He was a 1939 graduate of Aledo High School, where he played football for the first Green Dragon team that went undefeated in 1938. Bill married Margaret Monson on Dec. 14, 1947, in Aledo.

Bill farmed near Viola until 1984, when he retired and moved to Aledo. He enjoyed caring for the land and his cattle. He enjoyed playing bridge and five hundred. Bill had traveled to every state but Alaska. Coffee with friends was a favorite pastime.

Bill was a member of the Mercer County Farm Bureau, Mercer County Historical Society, AARP and a lifetime member of the Aledo First United Presbyterian Church until it closed in 1994. He had served as church elder and trustee.

Bill is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Gustafson and Betty Hofer, of Aledo; brother-in-law, Merle (Clara) Monson, of Galesburg; and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Tracy Morris; and three sisters, Alice Furnas, Josephine Fender and Dorothy Morford.
