Norman L. Aaland, a longtime Larimore resident, died April 21, 2010 in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND at the age of 83.

Norman William Lawrence Aaland was born in Nordmore Township in Foster County, ND on January 28, 1927 to Knut and Jennie (Hjelseth) Aaland. He was born into a family of three brothers, Carl, John and Arnold, and was joined by a sister Genevieve a few years later. Being born into a farm family, he loved to work outside. Norman would tell stories of learning to drive, camping with his brother Arnold, and walking trap lines with his uncle.

In the early 1950's he joined the Army during the time of the Korean conflict. After being honorably discharged, he set about choosing his occupation. While working on the Garrison diversion project he met Phyllis Werner. They married in Bismarck, ND in 1953. About a year later they became parents. Norman and Phyllis have five children. They shared family life until Phyllis died of cancer in January of 1988.

The family moved to Larimore in 1957 where Norman helped build some of the first hangers on the Grand Forks Air Base. What was to be a temporary stay in Larimore became a lifelong residence. Norman, a plumber and pipefitter and also a loyal union member, worked in the area under government contracts until he retired.

Norman loved to fix things, loved to work on cars, and had a special love of his dogs. One of his more fun things to do in the summer was to drive the 57 Chevy convertible around town with his dog Ginger at his side. Norman always took his dog everywhere.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and his brothers Arnold and John. He is survived by a brother and sister as well as his children. Norman is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew him.
