Mary Augusta Kilmer was born April 29, 1864 in Homer, Cortland County, New York, perhaps while her father was away in the Civil War. By age 6, Mary and her family were living in Colchester, Delaware County (1870 census).

At age 15, on October 11, 1879, Mary married Isaac McLennon Carley (1862-1923), age 17. Eight months later, they were living in Masonville, Delaware County, with 9-month-old son, Andrew Jackson.

On October 25, 1889, at age 25, Mary entered the county poorhouse as a married, self-supporting housekeeper, unable to work due to illness. With one child living, according to the poorhouse census, her prospects were noted as: "may recover." Three years later, she appeared on the 1892 NY census, reunited with Isaac and Andrew, plus Elnora, Laura, and Blanche.

By 1900, according to the census, the family had relocated to Tompkins, Delaware County; also, Mary had had 8 children, 6 still living, including Wesley, Homer, and Retha. Mary died at age 37 in Masonville on October 22, 1901, and was buried in Masonville Cemetery.
