On May 6, 1852, William married Sarah Jane Van Alstine (1830-1906), the daughter of Abraham and Caroline Kelsey Van Alstine. They had the following children:

By the 1860 cenus, the Kilmers were living in Centre Village, Colesville Township, Broome County, New York. On August 14, 1862, William enlisted as a private in the Union Army, serving in the Civil War in Company G, 89th New York Infantry. After the war, the family lived in Delaware County, first in Colchester (1870 census), and then Masonville (1880 census). William was a farmer by trade, and filed for a Civil War pension on June 30, 1880, app #399153, cert #463.103.
William died at 57 on February 6, 1885 in Ellenton, McNett Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, where his son George and family settled. He is buried in the Ellenton Cemetery, Lot #49, space #1. Wife Sarah Jane died in Otsego County, New York on February 17, 1906 and 3 days later was buried alongside her husband.
