Born in Cambridge, the daughter of Joseph Sweetser Spear and Charlotte Whipple. The family migrated to San Francisco in 1865 via the Isthmus of Panama. Her father an auctioneer and pioneer.


She married Samuel Pike Hall Jr. on March 11, 1879 in San Francisco. They had eight children. He was a prominent judge, district attorney and justice in the District Court of Appeals for Alameda County.
