Richard Whelpley Sturtevant was born 6 November 1915 in Winthrop, Massachusetts, to Mary Lodema (Montague) and Walter Elmer Sturtevant. In 1918 his family moved to Victorville and then in 1929 to Morton, Washington. He served in the Navy in the Pacific during WWII from 22 Sep 1941 to 13 Nov 1945 and was a chief commisary steward. He married Harriet Louise Hladik at Bremerton, Washington, in 1942. They had four children. Richard was chef and manager of the Breakwater Cafe in Santa Barbara, California, and was a member of the Culinary Alliance. Richard died at Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara, California.
