Walter Elmer Sturtevant was born 3 November 1885 in East Austin, Massachusetts. He was engaged in the restaurant business in Washington state with his wife Mary Lodema (Montague) Sturtevant. They moved to Santa Barbara. California, about 1843 and leased and operated the St. Francis hotel at 24 East Victoria Street. He died in a Camarillo, California, hospital after an illness of several months. He had three sons and three daughters.
