HELLER—WIROUCH—On Wednesday evening the 4th inst., at the residence of J. M. Martin, by the Rev. Adam Simpson, Nicholas Heller and Miss Carrie Wirouch, both of Brainerd.
The ceremony was witnessed and the subsequent festivities were participated in by a large number of invited guests. (Brainerd Tribune, 07 December 1878, p. 4, c. 1)

The Old Settlers' Union.
The first meeting of the old settlers of this city was held at the city council rooms with James Dewar in the chair, as temporary chairman, and A. Mahlum as temporary secretary. After the meeting was called to order Hon. L. P. White was elected president by acclamation, and J. E. Wilson secretary. Vice presidents of the association were elected as follows: Wm. Paine, R. H. Paine and Adam Brown. J. N. Nevers was elected treasurer. The qualifications of a member, as agreed upon by the committee on by-laws and adopted; are as follows:
"The requisite qualities for membership shall be fourteen years residence in Crow Wing or Cass counties, within a distance of fifteen miles of Brainerd. Provided—That any applicant who may have been a resident of said districts between the years of 1870 and 1875, and who for any cause removed from and is now a resident of said districts shall be eligible to membership."
The prime object of the movement is to "promote and cultivate good fellowship so readily required by reviewing with each other the pleasant or disagreeable incidents of fourteen years or more residence in the City of the Pines or vicinity."
The following is a roll of the members and when they became residents of the city:

Nicholas Heller, Long a Resident of
Brainerd, Died at His Home
Last Night
Nicholas Heller, of 430 Second Ave., N. E. died peacefully at his home Wednesday night. The deceased had been suffering with an acute attack of the grippe. He had been sick some time but no one in the family thought the end would come so soon.
The deceased was born in Germany, December 12, 1850, and with his parents emigrated to Kentucky when he was five years old. He grew to manhood and served his country in many ways. Mr. Heller enlisted April 18, 1867, in the 29th Infantry and his papers bear the recommendation "very good," signed by Brvt. Lt. Col. J. C. Bates, U. S. A. Capt. 29th Infantry. He re-enlisted April 8, 1872, serving five years in the same company. He was advanced from private to corporal and then held a sergeant's commission.
After he left the army the deceased came to Brainerd and was married here in 1878 to Miss Carrie Weirauch [sic]. He was one of the first settlers in Brainerd, being first employed as a fireman on the N. P. railroad. He left this work to engage in the dray business, being the first man to operate a dray line in Brainerd. He also worked in the freight department of the N. P. company here and left this department when he was employed at the city electric light plant. He worked at this post 12 years, abandoning it when severely injured in an accident at the station. The city then gave him easier employment at the city office of the light plant.
Mr. Heller was a member of the fire department for over five years, and also belonged to the Workmen and Odd Fellows orders, both of which will attend the funeral. In the Workmen lodge he was a charter member.
The deceased leaves surviving him his wife and three children, Paul, Ray and Marion Heller. The funeral will be held at two o'clock from the residence on Friday, May 12th, and at half past two from the People's church in Northeast Brainerd, Rev. J. A. Caskey officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.
