Composer. The son of August and Ottilie von Goethe, he had musical ambitions, studied under Mendelssohn in Leipzig and afterwards at Vienna. He published a few songs of no great merit, and had at his death no more than the reputation among his friends of a kindly and accomplished man. In 1853 he retired to the house at the Frauenplan and lived in almost complete isolation. He died during a visit in Leipzig. He left his whole property to the state of Weimar and the grand duchess Sophie.
