Mrs. Nannie M. Fain, 104, of Springfield died at 12:15 p.m. Friday at St. John's Hospital North. She was born in Sangamon County on May 19, 1882, the daughter of Christian and Frances Shellenberger, who preceded her in death.

A graduate of the Indiana State Teacher's College, she taught in Sangamon County country schools for five years. She later was employed by the American Red Cross and the Family Welfare Association. The county board appointed her overseer of the poor for Capital Township and later for Sangamon County. Retiring in 1952, Mrs. Fain was also employed by the Illinois Department of Public Aid for 19 years.

Mrs. Fain was a member of several service organizations, including the National Association of Social Workers. Throughout the years she was active in many civic and social groups and was a member of Kumler United Methodist Church and the Springfield Art Association.

Also preceding her in death were two daughters and one sister. On the event of her 100th birthday, a white oak tree was planted in Washington Park in her honor.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Frances Britton of Springfield; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one niece; and one nephew.

Remains were cremated. Graveside services in Oak Ridge Cemetery, with the Rev. Herbert Thompson officiating.
