Katherine Shelton Whitaker, 93, of Athens, died Thursday night, April 6, 2000, in a Scottsdale, Ariz., nursing home.

A native of Calhoun, she was a daughter of the late Samuel W. and Viola Hardin Shelton and was preceded in death by her husband, William F. "Bill" Whitaker, who served as superintendent of the Athens City School System; one sister, Mary Schultz; and five brothers, Bob Shelton, John Shelton, James Shelton, Samuel Shelton and Dave Shelton. A member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church and the Methodist Women’s Group, she was a graduate of Hiwassee College. A retired school teacher, she had taught at Calhoun Elementary and City Park schools and had coached and played basketball. She was a member of NEA, the Athens Garden Club and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and at the nursing home.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Anne and Richard Kubala of Surprise, Ariz.; one son and daughter-in-law, William F. "Chip" Jr. and Beverly Whitaker of Tabernacle, N.J.; five grandchildren, Steven Kubala of Pottstown, Penn., Kenneth Kubala of Boulder, Colo., Dana Miller of Blackwood, N.J., Adrienne Swinson of Tampa, Fla., and Melisa Whitaker of Blackwood, N.J.; one great-grandchild, Chris Miller; and three brothers, Joe Shelton of Athens, Paul Shelton of Knoxville and Pete Shelton of Manchester.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Stewart Havey and Lay Leader J. Neal Ensminger officiating. Burial will follow in Calhoun Cemetery.

Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The body will be in state at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday where the family will received friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The family suggests memorials be made to Keith Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1, Athens, TN 37371-0001.
