"William Hansard, possible son of John and Ann Hansard of Lexington Parish, Amherst County, Virginia, was born in Scotland in 1763. Hansard served as a private in Bedford County, Virginia, under Captain John Cottrell and guarded Tories in the town of New London in the state of Virginia for six months. William Hansard married Martha, daughter of Revolutionary War soldier Robert and Mary Christian, in Amherst Co., Va. on 24 Nov., 1792 Following the war Hansard migrated to East Tn. about 1806 and purchased 640 acres in the Bull Run Valley in 1811. William Hansard is reported to have given the land where Hansard's Chapel Methodist Church was established. The first building was a log cabin, and the second building was destroyed by fire in the 1940's. The current building was constructed soon after. William Hansard died sometime before 7 Sept., 1846 and was buried in Hansard's Chapel Methodist Church."
